Liverpool Echo – Family step up campaign to free ex-soldier held in Indian prison on gun-running charge

Paul Towers on his way to an earlier court hearing in India

Family of a Merseyside ex-soldier accused of gun-running in Indian waters have put pressure on the British government to do more to get him released.

Paul Towers, originally from Bootle , was one of six British nationals who, along with 29 other seafarers of different nationalities, were arrested by the Indian authorities in October 2013.

He was jailed for five years by an Indian court in January along with five other British crew members after they were found guilty of weapons charges.

The men were employed as armed guards by maritime security company Advanfort on board the MV Seaman Guard Ohio, tasked with protecting merchant shipping from pirate attack.
