MADURAI: The Madurai bench of the Madras high court on Monday dismissed a petition filed by 35 crew members of the US anti-piracy ship ‘Seaman Guard Ohio’ seeking to suspend the jail terms awarded to them by the Tuticorin district and sessions court on January 11.

The sessions court gave five years rigorous imprisonment to the crew members – twenty-three foreigners (14 Estonians, six British nationals and three Ukrainians) and twelve Indians and imposed a fine of Rs, 3000 on each of them.
The crew members preferred an appeal before the high court bench to set aside the lower court judgment. They also moved a petition seeking to suspend the sentence till the disposal of the case.
Justice V S Ravi heard the petition last week and reserved his order. On Monday, the Judge passed order dismissing the petition.
The Indian Coast Guard intercepted the vessel off the Kanyakumari coast on October 12, 2013. The ship was carrying arms illegally. Later, the Q Brach of the Tamil Nadu police took up the investigation and booked the crew members under various Acts, including Arms Act and Essential Commodities Act.
